Probably best known as a lager producing nation, drinkers in Denmark are turning their attention to cider from a Welsh company. Taffy Apples cider from True Taste Award-winning the Hurns Brewing Company is proving a hit in Denmark, with exports of the Swansea-based firm’s products to the country rapidly increasing. "The Danish can't seem to get enough of Taffy Apples or our beers,"says Hurns chief executive officer and head of export, Connie Parry. "Our wholesaler in Denmark keeps on asking us for more." The Hurns Brewing Company, which brews the award-winning Tomos Watkin range of ales exports to seven countries including the UAE, China, Singapore, France, and the USA. Says Connie, "We have had tremendous support from the Welsh Assembly Government, through which we have attended several trade missions and we have been successful in finding significant customers everywhere we have gone." "The taste and quality of the products is excellent, when you open the bottles for customers to try they want to buy them. Hurns began at the turn of the 19th century by manufacturing lemonade, ginger beer, soda water and fruit cordials. Connie and her brother Philip – whose grandfather founded the business - saved Tomos Watkin brewery in 2002, and Hurns now employs 69 people throughout the company. The Tomos Watkin range includes cask, keg and bottled ales as well as the award-winning Magic Lager and several seasonal varieties of cask ale, such as, Cwrw Haf, Cwrw Santa and Dewi Sant. They picked up a Gold & Silver Award at The World Beer Championships in Chicago. Closer to home, the Hurns range is available at Tesco, Asda, Co-op, Sainsbury's, and Spar stores in Wales as well as from Blakemore's, Majestic Wine Co. CK's, Dylans's, Cheers and all good retailers. Also available in pubs, clubs and restaurants and at the brewery itself, and also on-line www.hurnsbeer.co.uk Meanwhile the company is extending its expertise by linking up with Fuller’s Brewery – London’s oldest brewery. "Fuller's has a long and distinguished history, and it has been brewing beer for over 160 years. Some of our brewers are going to the historic Griffin Brewery in Chiswick to receive training from their master brewers," says Connie. .............................................................................................................................................. Switching to beer can help you lose weight! Good news for beer drinkers as new research, issued [THIS WEEK] shows you can enjoy your favourite tipple without putting on weight. In fact, swapping from wine to beer for just one week would save as many calories as a half-hour jog! * The research, published by CAMRA during the annual Great British Beer Festival in London shows that around one-third of men and women wrongly believe that beer has more calories than other alcoholic drinks. In fact, the opposite is true and, when drunk in moderation, beer can help you to lose weight, cut your alcohol consumption and, more generally, supplement a healthy lifestyle. CAMRA's research is based on a groundbreaking report entitled 'Beer, the natural choice?', by leading health journalist Isla Whitcroft. The report examined the health properties of beer and its calorie content, compared to other alcoholic drinks:
Connie Parry said, "It is great to see the myth of the 'beer belly' finally laid to rest. Too many consumers, particularly women, have been discouraged from drinking beer because of worries that it is fattening or unhealthy, and now we have proof positive that the opposite is true. Professor Charlie Bamforth, renowned technical brewing expert, also welcomed the report's findings. He said, "The major source of calories in any alcoholic drink is the alcohol itself, and because beer is the drinks category with the lowest average alcohol content it is also lowest in calories. Beer also contains no fat or cholesterol and very few free sugars. So for someone looking to lose weight, swapping their glass of wine for a beer every day would not only reduce their weekly alcohol intake by seven units – but also cut out more calories than are burned off during a typical 30 minute jog." *Based on Food Standards Agency Calorie Calculator - www.eatwell.gov.uk .............................................................................................................................................. .............................................................................................................................................. Hurns magic lager is voted 2008 Wales Regional Winner by Tesco Swansea based brewer, The Hurns Brewing Company, is celebrating after its bottled Magic Lagyr (lager) came out as the Tesco 2008 Wales regional winner in a blind tasting of new Welsh bottled beers. Judging was carried out earlier this year by a panel of industry experts and top food journalists on behalf of Tesco supermarket's annual Drinks Awards with the award ceremony itself taking place at the Kensington Roof Gardens in London last Friday (19 October). "We are absolutely thrilled. We actually heard the news while in Las Vegas at the American National Beer Wholesalers Association convention. We were the only Welsh brewer represented at the event, where our head brewer, David Campbell, led a couple of well received tutored tastings on a variety of British beer styles for our American 'cousins'," said Connie Parry, who co-owns Hurns with her brother Philip. "Knowledge of this prestigious award from Tesco gave us a magic finale to a very successful week and we were the toast of Vegas. Our American customers were suitably impressed as they were all well aware of the high profile Tesco enjoys in the UK". Now in its 15th year it was the largest ever Tesco Drinks Awards, with over 400 products - all of them never before listed at a national level. Dan Jago, Tesco Category Director Beers Wines and Spirits, commented, "At Tesco we are committed to bringing new, exciting products to the market. Great drinks deserve shelf-space and a chance to gain access to the UK consumer, and that is exactly what these Awards are designed to achieve." Since it saved the Tomos Watkin brewery in 2002, Hurns has enjoyed a great deal of brewing success, including two awards from True Taste of Wales for its bottled beers and numerous CAMRA ( Campaign for Real Ale) Awards for its cask conditioned ales. Currently there are five varieties of bottled beers in the Tomos Watkin range as well as the increasingly popular Taffy Apples Cider and several seasonal varieties of cask ale, such as, Cwrw Haf, Cwrw Santa and Dewi Sant. As a result of the Las Vegas trip, Hurns is about to send its first order of beer to their new importers in the USA, following a deal with Boston-based drinks distributor, St Killian and a glowing report from the 'Beer Advocate' - the definitive guide to beer in America. "It is a very exciting time for us. Our initial US distribution contract was for 12 states but this new contract will see our beers being sold across America in all 50 states in independent retailers, restaurants and delicatessens and now this Tesco award will hopefully lead to a much bigger presence for us here at home too" said Connie. "It has been a lot of hard work and we have had great support from the Welsh Assembly Government which, through events such as St David's Day in New York, enabled us to get our beers noticed in America." .............................................................................................................................................. Connie Parry nominated for Lloyds Tsb First Women Awards The shortlists for the 2008 First Women Awards, held by the CBI and Real Business magazine in association with Lloyds TSB Corporate Markets, are published today - and feature pioneering businesswomen across manufacturing, science, business services and finance. For the first year, the awards also honour trailblazing women in the public sector. .............................................................................................................................................. |
