Danes get a taste for Taffy Apples Cider

Probably best known as a lager producing nation, drinkers in Denmark are turning their attention to cider from a Welsh company.

Taffy Apples cider from True Taste Award-winning the Hurns Brewing Company is proving a hit in Denmark, with exports of the Swansea-based firm’s products to the country rapidly increasing.

“The Danish can’t seem to get enough of Taffy Apples or our beers,”says Hurns chief executive officer and head of export, Connie Parry. “Our wholesaler in Denmark keeps on asking us for more.”

The Hurns Brewing Company, which brews the award-winning Tomos Watkin range of ales exports to seven countries including the UAE, China, Singapore, France, and the USA.

The family-run company’s success in the global market place was recognised with a silver award in the Export Achievement category at the 2009 Wales the True Taste Food & Drink Awards, and was also voted New Welsh Exporting Company of the Year by the Welsh Assembly Government.

Says Connie, “We have had tremendous support from the Welsh Assembly Government, through which we have attended several trade missions and we have been successful in finding significant customers everywhere we have gone.”

“The taste and quality of the products is excellent, when you open the bottles for customers to try they want to buy them.

While being a Welsh company has also helped our success as I believe that we produce the finest food and drink in the world.”

Hurns began at the turn of the 19th century by manufacturing lemonade, ginger beer, soda water and fruit cordials. Connie and her brother Philip – whose grandfather founded the business – saved Tomos Watkin brewery in 2002, and Hurns now employs 69 people throughout the company.

The Tomos Watkin range includes cask, keg and bottled ales as well as the award-winning Magic Lager and several seasonal varieties of cask ale, such as, Cwrw Haf, Cwrw Santa and Dewi Sant. They picked up a Gold & Silver Award at The World Beer Championships in Chicago.

Closer to home, the Hurns range is available at Tesco, Asda, Co-op, Sainsbury’s, and Spar stores in Wales as well as from Blakemore’s, Majestic Wine Co. CK’s, Dylans’s, Cheers and all good retailers. Also available in pubs, clubs and restaurants and at the brewery itself, and also on-line www.hurnsbeer.co.uk

Meanwhile the company is extending its expertise by linking up with Fuller’s Brewery – London’s oldest brewery.

“Fuller’s has a long and distinguished history, and it has been brewing beer for over 160 years. Some of our brewers are going to the historic Griffin Brewery in Chiswick to receive training from their master brewers,” says Connie.

“In brewing there is always something new to learn and we hope the extra skills will lead to Hurns producing even more award-winning beer!”

Switching to beer can help you lose weight!

Good news for beer drinkers as new research, issued [THIS WEEK] shows you can enjoy your favourite tipple without putting on weight. In fact, swapping from wine to beer for just one week would save as many calories as a half-hour jog! * The research, published by CAMRA during the annual Great British Beer Festival in London shows that around one-third of men and women wrongly believe that beer has more calories than other alcoholic drinks. In fact, the opposite is true and, when drunk in moderation, beer can help you to lose weight, cut your alcohol consumption and, more generally, supplement a healthy lifestyle. CAMRA’s research is based on a groundbreaking report entitled ‘Beer, the natural choice?’, by leading health journalist Isla Whitcroft. The report examined the health properties of beer and its calorie content, compared to other alcoholic drinks:

Half pint of 3.8% Bitter (284ml)

Medium sized glass of 12% red wine (175ml)

Medium sized glass of 12% white wine (175ml)

Bottle of 5% ‘alcopop’ (275ml)

Connie Parry said, “It is great to see the myth of the ‘beer belly’ finally laid to rest.  Too many consumers, particularly women, have been discouraged from drinking beer because of worries that it is fattening or unhealthy, and now we have proof positive that the opposite is true.
We hope this research makes more people realise that beer is low in alcohol and calories – but still packed with a fantastic amount of flavour.”

Professor Charlie Bamforth, renowned technical brewing expert, also welcomed the report’s findings. He said, “The major source of calories in any alcoholic drink is the alcohol itself, and because beer is the drinks category with the lowest average alcohol content it is also lowest in calories.  Beer also contains no fat or cholesterol and very few free sugars. So for someone looking to lose weight, swapping their glass of wine for a beer every day would not only reduce their weekly alcohol intake by seven units – but also cut out more calories than are burned off during a typical 30 minute jog.”

Tomos Watkins Visited by Beer Loons

The birds are chirping, a light mist is lifting over the fields of gold, and Sting is singing in the background. My cobblestone retreat has brought me to a land of depth and character. I’ve heard stories of this beer, but have yet to   try it. Today is the day that I get to sample Tomos Watkin Old Style Bitter. Was a journey of so many miles worth the trip?
